The North Norfolk Railway has secured the future of a historic steam locomotive, 76084, which will undergo a major overhaul and restoration at their Weybourne Locomotive Works. This 1957-built locomotive, a British Railways Standard 4 2-6-0, is one of the last of its kind and has a rich history. It was initially used for freight but was saved from scrap in 1974 and returned to service in 2013 after a lengthy restoration process. The locomotive's popularity with passengers and its place in railway history make it a valuable addition to the North Norfolk Railway's fleet.
The overhaul is expected to cost £400,000 and will take around two years to complete. Once restored, 76084 will operate on the Poppy Line for the duration of its next 10-year boiler certificate. Graham Hukins, the general manager of the North Norfolk Railway, expressed his delight at the agreement with 76084 Limited, highlighting the locomotive's suitability for their line and its popularity with both passengers and locomotive crews. He believes this will ensure its regular use for years to come.
Mel Rutter, engineering director for the 76084 Locomotive Company Limited, also praised the North Norfolk Railway's expertise, stating that the engine is in safe hands. The agreement is significant as 76084 is one of just four surviving Standard 4 locomotives out of the 115 originally built. The North Norfolk Railway, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, is currently operating daily services, with six steam locomotives in service this summer, alongside special events and dining trains.
